Of all the shades a sapphire can possess, the true royal blue is perhaps the most captivating—and notoriously difficult to capture accurately on a screen or in print. This vivid, intense blue-violet hue holds a deep, rich tone that must be experienced in person to be truly appreciated. It is a gemstone you simply do not want to miss. While the term can encompass various depths of colour, the finest examples historically hail from the world’s premier mining regions, including Burma, Sri Lanka, and Madagascar. What’s rarer is finding a heated stone with this much life left in it. Plenty of heated sapphires come out flat, overly dark, or a little grey around the edges. This one didn’t. Kite Shaped Diamonds: Why This Cut
Kite shaped diamonds are exactly what they sound like. Four sides, two points, shaped like something a kid would fly on a windy day at East Coast Park. They’re a fancy cut, which in the trade just means “not round,” and they come with their own headaches for the cutter. Round brilliants are cut with dozens of tiny facets specifically so light bounces around and hides whatever’s going on inside. Very forgiving, very good at keeping secrets. Kites are the opposite. Fewer facets, broader flat surfaces, and any inclusion sits right out in the open like it paid for a front row seat. So the diamond actually has to be clean to pull this off.
Then there’s getting the shape right, which is its own small nightmare. The two side stones need to match each other almost exactly. Same length, same taper, same angle, or the whole thing looks lopsided the second you glance at it twice. Too long and thin, and they look fragile. Too short, and you lose the point of using them at all. Get it right, though, and you get what’s happening here. The hard, architectural edges of the kites playing off the soft, unbroken curve of the oval sapphire in the middle. It’s a deliberate contrast, not an accident. If You’re Considering an Oval Gemstone, Here’s What to Know
Oval never really goes out of favour with our clients. Doesn’t matter if the center stone is a sapphire, a ruby, or a tourmaline. Ask us why and it usually comes down to the same three things.
First, it flatters the hand. An oval draws the eye down its length instead of across it, and that alone makes fingers look longer and slimmer than a round stone of the same size ever could.
Second, it actually holds up to daily wear. No sharp corners means nothing snagging on a sweater or getting knocked against a car door, and it happens to look softer and a touch more feminine at the same time. Practical and pretty rarely show up together like that.
Third, you’re not giving up any sparkle to get there. An oval still throws off the same brilliant fire as a round stone, just stretched into a longer, more distinctive shape. That’s the whole reason we reached for it on the center stone in this piece.
Fourth, and this one’s more about how the stone gets made in the first place. Round might be everyone’s first instinct, but it’s actually one of the most wasteful shapes to cut. A lot of the rough crystal ends up on the floor just to get there, and we go into that in more detail over on our gemstone page. Oval gets about as close to round as you can practically manage, while holding onto far more of the original carat weight. It also happens to sparkle more than a step cut or a cushion cut, since those shapes are built to show off colour and clarity first, while oval is faceted closer to a round brilliant underneath. So you’re keeping more of the stone and not giving up any fire to do it.

Clarity matters more than people expect too. Even among heated stones, one that’s eye clean will cost noticeably more than one with visible inclusions, and given everything we just said about kite cuts showing off whatever’s inside a diamond, the same logic applies to the center stone as well.
