Why Round Cut Sapphires Are Less Common
Walk through any collection of fine sapphires and you will notice ovals and cushions dominate, while rounds are surprisingly scarce. The reason is economics at the cutting wheel. Sapphire rough rarely comes out of the ground in shapes that suit a round outline, as crystals tend toward elongated and irregular forms. Cutting a round brilliant from that rough means sacrificing significantly more material than an oval or cushion would, and in the sapphire trade, weight is value.
The premium attached to carat thresholds makes this sacrifice even more expensive. Two sapphires of identical colour, clarity and treatment status are not priced proportionally. A 2.0ct stone commands a substantial premium over a 1.8ct stone, because crossing the full-carat mark moves it into a different pricing tier entirely. A cutter holding rough that could finish as a 2.1ct oval or a 1.7ct round will choose the oval almost every time. The round only happens when a cutter decides the rough deserves it.
That is what makes a 1.68ct round brilliant sapphire like this one a quietly uncommon choice. Someone, somewhere along the line, accepted the weight loss to achieve the symmetry and light return that only a round delivers. The result is a sapphire that sparkles more like a diamond than most sapphires ever will.
