At the centre of this ring sits a 2.01ct emerald in a vivid, saturated green, cut as a classic emerald cut. The long step facets run down the stone like a corridor of mirrors, drawing the eye into the colour rather than throwing it back as sparkle, which is exactly what an emerald of this quality asks for. Four yellow gold claws hold it at the corners, the warm metal deepening the green where it meets the stone.
Beneath the emerald, out of sight from above, a ring of small diamonds is set as a hidden halo, circling the base of the stone where only a side view reveals it. The band carries a line of micro-pavé diamonds down each shoulder, 32 stones in all totalling 0.46ct, so the emerald appears to rest on a ribbon of light. Seen face on, the ring reads as a clean solitaire in colour. Seen from the side, it gives up its secret, a collar of brilliance tucked under the green.
Yellow gold is the choice that ties it together. Against warm gold the green of an emerald looks richer and more alive than it does against white metal, which can cool and flatten the colour. Here the gold band, the gold claws and the vivid green stone sit in one warm, confident key, with the white diamonds threading brightness through the whole design.
The Hidden Halo
A hidden halo does its work from underneath. A traditional halo rings the centre stone with diamonds on the surface, visible from above. A hidden halo moves that ring of diamonds down beneath the stone, so it disappears when the ring is seen face on and only flashes into view as the hand turns. The effect is twofold. It lifts the emerald up off the band, giving it height and presence, and it sends light up around the base of the stone, so the emerald looks brighter and seems to float above a concealed band of sparkle. It is detail worn for the wearer more than for the room, a piece of brilliance only they and a close look will find.
What Makes This Emerald Rare
Colour is the first and last word on an emerald. The most prized stones show a pure, saturated green, deep enough to read as vivid without darkening toward black, and this stone carries a GRS report confirming that vivid green grade. The cut it wears is no accident of fashion either. The step cut now called the emerald cut was developed centuries ago for emerald itself, its bevelled corners protecting a brittle stone from chipping and its open facets giving the colour room to show.
Clarity in emerald is read differently from diamond. Emerald belongs to a family of stones that almost always grow with inclusions, the fine internal markings jewellers call the jardin, or garden, and a stone entirely free of them is rare enough to be treated with suspicion. Nearly all emeralds are treated to fill surface-reaching fissures and improve appearance, a normal and accepted practice, and the laboratories grade how much treatment a stone has received. This emerald is graded minor on that scale, sitting at the better end where enhancement is slight, and the GRS report records both the colour and that clarity grade. For a coloured stone, that pairing of vivid green with limited treatment is what separates a fine emerald from a commercial one.
