Custom Design
Each stud is built on a contrast between geometry and bloom. At the top sits a pink spinel cut as a crisp octagon and set on the diagonal, its corners pointing out like a compass so the square reads as a bright pink lozenge on the ear. The colour is a clear, vibrant pink with real life to it, the kind of open brightness spinel is known for. Below the stone, two marquise diamonds and a kite fan out like a small wing, a spray of petals tucked beneath the structured stone.
The design lives on that meeting of opposites. The spinel is all straight edges and sharp corners, architectural and modern, while the diamonds beneath it are all curve and point, soft and organic, catching light in quick flashes as the head turns. One anchors, the other flowers. Setting the pink stone on the diagonal rather than square gives the whole earring a sense of movement, as though the flower is growing out from under the stone rather than simply sitting beside it.
Worn on the ear the pair sits close and neat, structured enough for daytime and bright enough for evening, moving easily from one to the other. White gold is the right metal for it, keeping everything cool and clean so the pink of the spinel and the white fire of the diamonds carry the whole design without the metal competing.
Why Spinel Deserves Its Name
Spinel spent centuries mistaken for ruby and sapphire. Some of the most famous red stones in royal history, set among the crown jewels of more than one country, turned out on modern testing to be spinel rather than ruby. That confusion is a compliment to the stone. It shares the brilliance and the rich colour, and in pink it glows with a clarity all its own. Today, collectors who know gemstones seek spinel in its own right rather than as a substitute for anything else.
Part of its appeal is honesty. Where most sapphire and nearly all ruby on the market has been heated to improve colour, fine spinel is typically natural and untreated, its colour exactly as it came from the earth. A clean, vibrant pink spinel has earned that colour without any help from a furnace, which is increasingly what draws people to it. Matched as an even pair, as these are, natural pink spinels take real searching to find, since the colour has to agree across two separate stones.
