Sapphires Colour Change
Sapphire has gone beyond the rare colours, to colour change sapphire from purple to blue and blue to purple. Definitely, they do not changing depending on individual mood, but under different light conditions. Under the natural daylight, it exhibits a mix of blue and purple tone in this gemstone.
Rare Sapphire
We have seen the most valuable, intense vivid Royal Blue Sapphire. To rarest of all, orange-pink or pinkish-orange Padparadscha Sapphire. Sapphire has a wide variety of colour shades, range from yellow, orange, pink, green and black. We have featured Bi-colour sapphire with bluish-green, custom made to an engagement ring.
Value in Colour Change Sapphire
Generally, the value of different coloured gemstone determined by the intensity and saturation of its colour. One with strong vivid colour, is usually more valuable than the other that is lighter or pastel in colour.
For colour change sapphire, we usually judge by the change in colour, from weak, moderate, or strong, basically the contrast in two different colours. This change in colour contrast and colour intensity of the gemstone are the main factors that determined its value. Price of colour change sapphire can range from $1000 per carat to $5000 or more per carat for the unheated ones.
Cut and Clarity
Like all other coloured sapphires, they are cut and polished from rough stones. Usually, the common shapes are cushion and oval. As they are extremely rare, for less common shapes like heart-shaped or round, we can’t say is impossible, but will definitely require longer than usual time to source for one good quality colour change sapphire.
Another factor which affect its value will be the clarity. As compared to colour intensity, it is less important. But it will not be appealing if the sapphire is too included, which might affect the durability of the gemstone too.

Having said that, it is always good to see the sapphire in actual. As we all know, a picture can be enhanced or edited. Nothing beats seeing the gemstone with our own eyes. When you are choosing a coloured gemstone, do take a look under the daylight to see it’s “True Colour”. Be sure that they sparkle well with excellent fire in the gemstone.
