The “Santa Maria” Benchmark
In the world of high jewellery, not all aquamarines are created equal. The commercial market is flooded with “icy blue” stones that often appear washed out or near-colourless. At GIOIA Fine Jewellery, we pursue a different standard known as the Santa Maria grade. Originally discovered in the Santa Maria de Itabira mines of Brazil, these rare gems possessed a deeply saturated, electric blue intensity that set the global benchmark.
With the original Brazilian deposits now largely depleted, the search for this colour has shifted to Africa. Today, the finest “Santa Maria African” aquamarines are sourced from specific pockets in Mozambique (specifically the Nampula and Zambezia provinces). These stones rival their Brazilian predecessors, with a vivid ocean blue.
Rarity: Santa Maria grade aquamarines are becoming harder to find. As some African mines slow down, deeply saturated stones like these have become scarce, which is why we save them for pieces meant to be kept.
How Much Does an Aquamarine Ring Cost?
Colour drives the price of aquamarine more than anything else. A pale, sky blue stone costs a fraction of one with the deep, saturated blue the trade calls Santa Maria. Size comes next, but because aquamarine grows in large, clean crystals, a bigger stone does not cost as much more as it would in sapphire or ruby. Clarity, cut, the metal and any diamonds make up the rest.

Is Aquamarine Heat Treated?
Most aquamarine sold today has been heated to remove a greenish tint and leave a purer blue. The change is stable and permanent, and it is accepted across the trade. Because this kind of heating leaves little trace, laboratories usually cannot say for certain whether an aquamarine has been heated, so we only describe an aquamarine as unheated when a laboratory report says so.
How to Tell a Natural Aquamarine
Blue topaz is the stone most often passed off as aquamarine. It is noticeably heavier for its size and often a brighter, more electric blue. Glass and synthetic spinel turn up too. You cannot tell these apart reliably by eye, which is why we tell you exactly what each stone is, and centre stones above about SGD 1,000 come with a report from an independent laboratory such as GRS, GIA or NGI.
