Unheated Blue Sapphire: A Gemstone in a Class of Its Own
Unheated blue sapphire is prized for their natural beauty, untouched by any thermal enhancement processes. But why are unheated sapphires more valuable? The answer lies in their rarity and the purity of their natural characteristics. Only a small percentage of sapphires are found in this unaltered state, making them highly sought after by gemstone collectors and fine jewellers.
Exhibit a raw, organic brilliance that can be mesmerising, with colours that range from subtle to vivid for unheated blue sapphire. There are many misperception that unheated blue sapphire are often pastel in shade which definitely not true. At GIOIA Fine Jewellery, our well diverse selection of unheated blue sapphire will certainly satisfy your desire for fine quality gemstone. They are one-of-a-kind gems, each possessing a unique charm that stands apart from heat-treated sapphires.
However, not all unheated sapphires are created equal. They are natural gemstone, how can they be the same? When choosing an unheated blue sapphire, ensure that its beauty rivals that of treated sapphires—look for one that captivates you with its sparkle and depth of colour at first sight. A stunning blue hue in an unheated sapphire can hold its value and remain in constant demand.

Are Unheated Blue Sapphire More Valuable?
Yes, unheated blue sapphires are generally more valuable than their heat-treated counterparts. This is due to their rarity and the fact that they remain in their natural state, showcasing their original beauty. The market for fine-quality unheated sapphires is always strong, with prices reflecting their uniqueness.
However, it’s important to remember that value also depends on other factors, such as colour, clarity, and carat weight. A heated sapphire that exhibits rich, even colour and excellent clarity will command a higher price than an unheated sapphire with lesser qualities. Therefore we strongly advise do no just choose the sapphire solely based on heat treatment on the sapphire gemstone.
Heat Enhancement: The Common Practice
Approximately 90% of sapphires on the market have undergone heat enhancement. This process involves exposing the sapphire to extremely high temperatures, close to the melting point, to improve its appearance. Heat treatment fills natural inclusions, enhances clarity, and boosts the saturation of the gemstone’s colour. This treatment significantly improves the sapphire’s visual appeal, making it more affordable for those seeking beauty at a lower price point. It generally elevate the value of the not so nice quality sapphire gemstone.
Heat enhancement is not exclusive to sapphires, it is also commonly applied to other gemstones like ruby and paraiba tourmaline. However, some stones, like spinel, are often left untreated, whereas emerald gemstones are commonly oil treated to significantly improve its appearance. For those who appreciate the beauty of a sapphire but prefer a more budget-friendly option, heat-treated sapphires offer an excellent alternative without compromising on brilliance.
Natural vs. Unheated Sapphires: What’s the Difference?
The terms “natural” and “unheated” can sometimes be confusing. All unheated sapphires are natural, but not all natural sapphires are unheated. A “natural sapphire” simply means that the gemstone was formed in the earth and not created in a lab. However, many natural sapphires undergo heat treatment to enhance their appearance. Unheated sapphires, on the other hand, have not been subjected to any heat treatment, preserving their original state as nature intended. Therefore when one says that the sapphire is natural does not mean it is unheated, it’s essential to obtain an independent gemology certification.

How to Tell if a Sapphire is Unheated?
Determining whether a sapphire is unheated requires expert evaluation and certification. A reputable gemological laboratory, such as GRS (GemResearch Swisslab), can analyze a sapphire’s internal characteristics and confirm whether it has been subjected to heat treatment. When purchasing an unheated sapphire, always ask for a certification from a trusted gemological lab to ensure authenticity. It is always more trustworthy to have an independent certification than in-house certification, where there isn’t any conflict of interest.
Do Blue Sapphires Lose Their Colour?
One of the remarkable qualities of blue sapphires is their ability to retain their colour over time. Unlike some gemstones that may fade when exposed to light, sapphires are incredibly stable and do not lose their colour under normal conditions. Whether heated or unheated, a sapphire’s colour will remain vibrant for a lifetime, making it a durable and lasting choice for jewelry. Do not that padparadscha sapphire will need to gone through a process of colour stabilisation check.
Colour Diffusion Sapphires: A Warning for Buyers
While heat enhancement is an accepted and common practice, colour diffusion is another uncommon method. This technique involves introducing chemicals during the higher than usual heating process to artificially enhance the sapphire’s colour. While these stones may look vibrant and intense, they are considered less valuable. A sapphire that has undergone colour diffusion may still be labeled as “natural” because it was mined from the earth, but its value is significantly lower than untreated or heat-enhanced sapphires. In our opinion this is an unethical way of improving sapphire colour.
Always check the certification carefully to see if the sapphire has been subjected to colour diffusion. Just like B/C-grade jade, which may appear intense green but lacks the value of A-grade jade, colour-diffused sapphires may look appealing but hold little value in the world of fine gemstones.
Bespoke Sapphire Jewellery: Making Your Vision a Reality
The beauty of an unheated blue sapphire lies not just in its colour but in how it speaks to you personally. Whether you are drawn to the light cornflower blues or the deeper royal hues, there’s a shade of blue sapphire for everyone. When selecting a sapphire for a custom piece, trust your instincts—choose a colour that captivates you instantly.
With bespoke jewelry, the possibilities are endless. Whether it’s an engagement ring, a pendant, or a pair of earrings, the design can be tailored to reflect your style and personality. A custom setting can elevate the sapphire’s brilliance, creating a masterpiece of fine jewelry that is uniquely yours.

Why Paraiba Tourmaline so valuable and rare, known as one of the rarest gemstones in the world?
Rough paraiba tourmalines can only be found in small and tiny veins. Extremely rare to find Paraiba in bigger carat size, where prices increases significantly after 2.0 carat.
Every piece of Paraiba rough mined underground is very precious, that miners required manual tools like wedges and hammers to prevent damages in them, as compared to machinery assistance. The process of mining is more intensive as compared to other coloured gemstone.
They come with many natural inclusion such as bubble and needle-like. Due to the neon appearance and fine brilliance, such inclusion is tolerable in the market. Paraiba tourmaline with good clarity and electric-neon brilliance cost more than diamonds.
