Customised Engagement Ring

Customised Engagement Ring with Blue Sapphire Halo Diamond

At GIOIA Fine Jewellery, we run a private bespoke boutique at International Plaza where every customised engagement ring starts from a blank canvas, not a catalogue. We hold one of Singapore’s largest in-house physical collections of unheated coloured gemstones, each hand-selected and independently certified. If you want a proposal ring that no chain store in Singapore carries, this is where that conversation begins.

Most couples walk into jewellery stores already knowing something feels off. The rings look the same, the salesperson is reading off a script, and nothing in the case actually reflects who they are. We work differently. Before anything is sketched or priced, we sit you down and listen to your love story. Where did you meet? What does she actually wear? What matters to her? Only after we understand that does the ring begin to take shape.

The details that matter most on a ring are usually invisible at first glance. The angle of a prong, the thickness of the shank, the way the setting holds light under the afternoon sun versus dim evening lighting. We obsess over these things because they determine whether a ring lasts 50 years or develops problems in four. Good-looking and structurally sound are not the same thing, and we refuse to trade one for the other.

Customised Engagement Ring Portfolio & Unique Case Studies

Each customised engagement ring engineered at GIOIA weaves a distinct narrative through precious metal and rare gems. Here are select iconic creations we have had the privilege to forge.

Ruby Moon and Star inspired Unique Proposal Ring Rose Gold in Singapore

The “Moon & Star” Ruby

Inspired by the vastness of the celestial night sky, this piece required intricate metalwork to achieve a delicate yet secure profile.
The Gem: A vibrant, unheated Ruby (her birthstone) acts as the burning core, exuding intense red fluorescence under UV light.
The Setting: We sculpted a Rose Gold band featuring an asymmetrical “Moon Crest” that cradles the ruby, accented with scattered, brilliant-cut diamonds mapping out a subtle constellation.

The “Musical Note” Paraiba Tourmaline

For a partner whose life is anchored in music, we engineered custom prongs in the shape of delicate musical quavers. The true technical challenge lay in ensuring these thematic prongs provided maximum structural security for the rare Brazil Paraiba Tourmaline without obstructing the light entering the stone’s pavilion.

Gemstone Necklace Padparadscha Sapphire Proposal with Twisted Bands

The “Proposal Necklace” Solution

A memorable engagement need not be confined to a finger. We crafted a personalised Padparadscha Sapphire Necklace for a surgeon unable to wear rings in the operating theatre. This elegant, twisted Rose Gold pendant offers a brilliant approach to practical, personalised luxury, allowing her to keep her engagement symbol securely close to her heart.

What Does a Customised Engagement Ring Actually Mean?

The word “customised” gets used loosely in Singapore’s jewellery market. Most chain stores that advertise customised engagement rings mean one of three things: engraving a name on the inside, choosing between a handful of pre-set stone shapes, or selecting a metal colour from a swatch card. The template and mold already exists. Your ring is a variation of a ring that has already been made for someone else.

A genuinely customised engagement ring works in the opposite direction. The design does not exist yet. Nothing is pre-set. The ring is built from the beginning around a specific stone, a specific person, and a set of decisions that are entirely yours. The metal, the prong style, the band profile, the hidden details inside the gallery that only the two of you will ever know are there.

The distinction matters because it determines what you actually receive. A modified catalogue ring ages like a catalogue ring. A ring built specifically for one person, from raw metal and a stone chosen in person, carries the story of those decisions for the next fifty years. That is what customised means at GIOIA.

Personalised Experience At GIOIA

When you come in, you are working directly with Clarence and Cheryl, not a sales associate. Cheryl is an HRD Antwerp certified Diamond Grader and NAFA Jewellery Design graduate who has been sourcing unheated coloured gemstones for over a decade. She will put the actual stones in your hand, under natural light, and walk you through exactly what you are looking at and why it matters. But what most clients do not expect is what they walk away with beyond the ring.

By the end of the session, you understand your own taste in a way you did not before. What colours draw you in. What settings feel like you. What quality markers actually matter to you personally. That clarity is something you cannot get from browsing online or walking through a mall. It is exclusive to the experience we have built at GIOIA.

Finding the right customised engagement ring for your proposal

The Dilemma: Walking through a street of mass-market jewellery stores can quickly become overwhelming. After exhaustive research into customised engagement rings, many clients find themselves sorting through thousands of generic, machine-made choices that lack character, yielding nothing that feels deeply personal.

The Solution: Whether you know exactly what you want or have only a feeling and a reference photo, we work from there. Modern and minimal, vintage filigree, high-set classic — every customised engagement ring we create is engineered around your selected gemstone, your partner, and the story that is specific to both of you. The result is not just a beautiful ring. It is one that actually means something.

GIOIA Customised Engagement Ring vs. Mass-Market Retailers

Side by side, here is what that difference looks like in practice. A customised engagement ring at GIOIA starts from a stone and a sketch. A mass-market modification starts from a template and lets you change a few variables. There is a world of different comparing customising your engagement ring at GIOIA to typical jewellery shop.

The GIOIA Difference: In-House Mastercraft & Gemstone Curation

Every customised engagement ring at GIOIA is managed in-house from gemstone selection through to final handcrafting. Clarence and Cheryl personally vet every stone we carry. We do not work from a digital catalogue. Every gem is handled physically, examined under magnification, and rejected if it does not meet our standard. The ones that make it into our vault are the ones Cheryl would set in her own jewellery or recommend as part of our investment gemstone collection.

We enforce strict selection criteria, sourcing directly from ethical industry titans like Gemfields and Fura. We seek out the best colour saturation, such as the vivid chromium glow of a pigeon blood ruby or the velvety, iron-titanium depth of a royal blue sapphire, qualities that remain untouched by thermal enhancement. Every premium gemstone is backed by independent reports from internationally recognised laboratories (GIA, GRS, or NGI). From the initial microscopic vetting of the gem’s crystal lattice to the final master handcrafting, a level of exclusivity and provenance that mass-market brands simply cannot replicate.

Customised Engagement Ring Design Process

Creating a bespoke ring takes time, and our timeline is there for a reason. We recommend a minimum of 10 to 12 weeks for the entire bespoke customised journey. Gemstone selection alone can take more than one session. The sketch goes through revisions. The 3D rendering is reviewed, adjusted, and reviewed again. The metalwork is forged by hand, not cast by machine. Every stage demands the time it deserves because the masterpiece you walk away with has to perfectly match the one you pictured when you first walked in. Mass-market stores work fast because they are simply pulling from stock. At GIOIA, we are building your legacy from a blank canvas, and that is a completely different process.

Step 1

Private Gemstone Discovery

You handle the actual stones, not photographs. Under a jeweller’s loupe and natural daylight, Clarence walks you through what you are looking at. The silk inclusions inside an unheated sapphire. The pleochroism that shifts a teal stone from green to blue. Why two stones at the same carat weight can be priced completely differently. This session doubles as a complementary Gemstone Mastery Class, exclusive to GIOIA clients. You leave knowing more about coloured gemstones than you ever expected.

Step 2

Personalised Design Consultation

We ask the questions most jewellers skip. Does she work with her hands? Does she stack her rings? What colours does she gravitate toward in her wardrobe? Is her style classic, modern, or somewhere in between? A high cathedral setting looks incredible but catches on everything for a nurse or a chef. A low bezel protects the stone but changes how light enters it. Yellow gold flatters warmer skin tones. Platinum suits cooler ones. These decisions matter for the next 50 years, not just the proposal photo.

Step 3

Custom Design Phase

This is where the ring starts to have a personality. We choose the metal based on both aesthetics and function. Platinum is denser and holds prongs more securely over decades. Rose gold has warmth but requires more maintenance. Champagne gold sits between the two visually. We also discuss hidden details here. A city skyline carved into the gallery, a pet’s silhouette inside the band, a date in morse code along the shank. These are the things only you and she will ever know are there. Once the direction is confirmed, Cheryl sketches the initial concept on the spot. You see the ring take shape in real time, not over weeks of back-and-forth.

Step 4

Scaled Digital Sketching

1 to 2 weeks after confirmation

We transition your concept into a 1:1 scale technical sketch. Every millimetre is drafted against the actual measurements of your selected gemstone and the side diamonds. We refine the exact proportions of the shank, the halo, and the gallery to ensure the precious metal perfectly frames the gemstone without overwhelming its natural fire. This is the blueprint everything that follows depends on.

Step 5

3D Digital Rendering

4 to 5 weeks

Before any gold is poured, we construct a mathematically precise 3D rendering. You review the ring from every angle, in true proportion, with the exact gemstone dimensions modelled in. Request changes here, not after the metal has been worked. What looks balanced in a sketch does not always translate to three dimensions, which is why this step exists. The rendering also confirms the final ring weight and structural integrity before craftsmanship begins.

Step 6

Master Handcrafting

Approximately 4 weeks after rendering approval

Our master craftsmen take over. They pull the gold wire by hand, shape the side gallery, and file each prong individually. The center gemstone is set under a microscope. This is not a casting operation. Every part of the ring that touches the stone is shaped and checked by hand to ensure the gem sits correctly, catches light at the right angle, and will not move.

Step 7

Rigorous Quality Check & Final Touches

1 to 2 weeks

Before the ring leaves the bench, Cheryl inspects it personally. Prong tension, stone security, surface polish, symmetry, and the integrity of any pavé or side stone settings. If something is not right, it goes back. This is not a box-ticking exercise. It is the same standard she applies to pieces she would wear herself.

Step 8

The Masterpiece Presentation

Scheduled with you upon completion

When your custom engagement ring is ready, we document it properly before you take it home. Professional macro photography captures the stone’s colour and the metalwork at a level your phone camera cannot. We also produce a high-definition video of the ring under different lighting conditions so you have a permanent record of how it looks in natural daylight, warm indoor light, and direct flash. No other jeweller in Singapore does this as standard. These assets are yours to keep.

How Much Does a Customised Engagement Ring Cost in Singapore?

The assumption that bespoke always costs more is not accurate when you compare like for like. Chain stores carry heavy brand overhead, retail leases across multiple locations, franchise fees, marketing budgets. You pay for all of that in the price tag. Some bespoke studios charge a consultation fee before a single stone is shown to you. At GIOIA, there is no consultation fee. You are paying for the stone and the craft, nothing else. Because we source directly and do everything in-house, the same budget goes significantly further.

Whether your customised engagement ring begins at an accessible entry point of SGD $3,900 or extends into a magnificent high-jewellery piece at SGD $25,000+, our advisors provide strategic guidance. The range is wide because four factors determine the final cost. We show you how to maximize carat weight, gem clarity, and setting intricacy while remaining strictly within your financial comfort zone. We deliver honest craftsmanship and transparent valuation.

What determines the price?

Most clients come to us with a budget in mind rather than a specific carat weight. That is the better way to approach a bespoke commission. Tell us what you are comfortable spending, and we will reverse-engineer the strongest possible combination of gemstone, setting, and craftsmanship within that range.

Sometimes that means recommending a smaller carat weight of exceptional quality. Sometimes it means a larger stone in a different gemstone family. We will walk you through the trade-offs so you can decide what matters most. This transparency is the reason most of our clients commission with confidence rather than uncertainty.

The centre piece

This is usually the largest cost component. The entry tier from SGD 3,900 typically features a smaller carat weight tourmaline, spinel, or aquamarine, sourced to the same quality standard Cheryl applies to every gemstone we work with. Sapphire, ruby, and emerald sit in a higher tier because of their rarity and demand. Origin, carat weight, colour saturation, clarity, and certification (GRS, or GIA) all affect the price. Clarence will show you stones at multiple price points so you can see the difference in person before deciding.

The side stones & accent diamonds

If your design includes a halo, pavé band, or side diamonds, each stone is individually selected and set. A halo of 0.5 total carat weight in F-G VS clarity diamonds adds meaningfully to the cost. A solitaire with no side stones keeps the budget focused on the centre gem.

The metal & ring proportions

Platinum is denser than 18K gold. Wider shanks and heavier galleries use more metal. Gold price is the one variable outside our control. It fluctuates daily based on global commodity markets, which is why every quote we issue carries a 14-day validity on the gold component. Once you confirm within that window, the gold price is locked.

The complexity of the craftsmanship

Because our designs are produced in-house by our own designers, and our craftsmen network is established and consistent, the labour cost on a custom ring at GIOIA is stable and transparent.

A clean solitaire takes less bench time than a ring with hand-carved gallery details, milgrain edging, a hidden engraving, or a custom prong silhouette. The more handwork involved, the more master-craftsman hours go into the piece. We give you a clear cost breakdown before any work begins.

Indicative price ranges

Customised Engagement Ring DesignIndicative Range
Solitaire with smaller carat tourmaline, spinel, or aquamarine, simple bandSGD $3,900 to $4500
Halo or three-stone setting with sapphire, ruby, or emeraldSGD $4,800 to $15,000
Statement piece with premium unheated centre stone (1.5ct+) and detailed metalworkSGD $15,000 to $25,000+

Choosing a Coloured Gemstone for Your Customised Engagement Ring

More couples in Singapore are choosing coloured gemstones for their customised engagement ring. Not because it is trendy, but because they want something genuinely rare. A stone with a geological identity, a provenance, and a character that no two pieces share.

At GIOIA we work with the full spectrum of precious coloured gemstones. Each has its own personality and its own argument for why it belongs at the centre of a proposal ring. If you are exploring which stone suits your partner, our dedicated guide to coloured gemstone engagement rings walks through each stone’s character, rarity, and who tends to choose it.

Expert Guidance: Discovering the “Fire” in Person

No photograph captures what a good gemstone actually looks like in person. Screens flatten colour, kill depth, and hide the way light moves inside the stone. A Muzo emerald and a mediocre emerald can look identical on your phone. In the hand under natural daylight, they are completely different objects. This is why we do not sell stones over email or WhatsApp photos. Come in and see them properly before you decide anything.

Customised Ring Design Capabilities & Hidden Details

At GIOIA, the details that most people never see are the ones we spend the most time on. A city skyline in the gallery, a date in morse code along the shank, a pet’s silhouette inside the band. Here is what we can build into yours:

Architectural Tributes

We carve the silhouette of a favourite city skyline or monument, like the Paris Eiffel Tower, directly into the ring’s open gallery.

Matching Eye Gemstone from blue green to paraiba tourmaline gemstone
Eye colour matching gemstone from human eyes to coloured gemstone

Inspiration: Match Her Eye Colour

For an intimately personal design, consider sourcing a gemstone that reflects the precise colour of her eyes. Imagine the brilliance of an unheated sapphire mirroring her blue eyes, or the verdant depths of an emerald reflecting a vibrant green. This specific gemstone curation ensures the ring is intrinsically tied to her.

Planning Your Unique Proposal

The Element of a Surprise Proposal

Option 1: The “Gemstone Proposal” You select the perfect, loose gemstone and propose with it presented in a bespoke gem box. She then experiences the thrill of co-designing the metalwork and setting with you in our atelier. The perfect fusion of a grand surprise and a shared creative journey.

Option 2: The “Joint Selection” Bring her in to explore our vault and discover her perfect gem match together. Once the stone is secured, you take over the design phase in secret, culminating in a finished engagement ring she never saw coming

Unique Love Story

Personalised Wedding Rings

I came to Gioia with a very specific vision for a custom engagement ring: three national flowers representing our roots and a pink gemstone at the centre. Cheryl drafted the design while Clarence advised on the stone and details, and together they elevated my idea beyond what I had in mind. My wife had no idea about the ring until the proposal, so it was a true collaboration between the team and me, and I’m proud of what we came up with.

We returned together with my wife to design our wedding bands, this time with a shared idea: motifs to match our themed wedding in New Zealand. Cheryl and Clarence took our concept and ran with it, suggesting alexandrite, a rare colour-changing gem we hadn’t considered. It was a perfect, unexpected touch that we both love.

Throughout the entire process, they were patient, attentive, and never pushy. No upselling, no pressure, just genuine care for getting the design right. We recently had our wedding, and the rings felt truly special and matched our theme perfectly. Thank you Cheryl, Clarence, and the Gioia team for being part of such an important chapter in our lives.

Honest Service & Transparency

Customised Engagement Ring with Teal Sapphire

Firstly, v thankful to husband and wife team for making it possible. They are v hands on. In short, service, service, service & quality.

Story 1:
Visited a few gemstone places before, this was the first one where Cheryl drew out the design of the band on my first visit. Other places just showed me the gem, and didn’t have either the expertise / enthusiasm to help me visualise what band designs would suit my chosen gem. That mattered to me. At customised ring stalls, you usually have to pay for the gem in full before they get their workers to discuss the band design and draw it out for you. I’m someone who is willing to go back and start fr scratch if I did not like the gemstone-band pairing. Haha, except that would mean the first gem costing 4-5 digits is just gonna be left sitting there 😅

Story 2: I couldn’t make it other days & Sat mornings, so very grateful to Cheryl and Clarence for opening their shop on Sat evening (5-7 ish) for us. My then bf had alr visited once before to recce the gems before bringing me. I experienced the same hospitality as him, and also could sense that these shop owners wanted the best for their clients. After I received my ring and wore it for a week, I visited for a third time as I was worried about possible flaws in the gem. Clarence carefully examined the gem and explained to me patiently. Turns out, it was just natural inclusions of a natural unheated piece. I haven’t tried other jewellers before, but I’m not sure if they’ll give the same level of service: being able to quickly find your consultants (the same ones too) to meet you on 3 occasions, 1 of which is after the ring has been delivered

Story 3: I’ll put qn image of the ring in the review so you can judge the aesthetics and craftsmanship. Overall, the gems collection they had was varied and very competitively priced, especially considering the gems’ quality. They aren’t like Madly Gems, with lots of employees and a huge marketing team. That means less of what you are paying for at Gioia is going into marketing, their employee salary payouts etc. But rounding back, beautiful gems 🙂

Customised engagement ring with Ruby trilogy design

Your Trusted Guide at Every Step

Customised Ruby Trilogy Ring

My fiancé is enamored with the ruby trilogy ring designed by the GIOIA team: Clarence, Cheryl, & Matthew. I could not have had a better experience selecting our engagement ring. My partner and I are in an LDR, so to navigate this process, I required significant support and wisdom – which the team provided generously.

There was:
1. Abundant input on the feasibility of attaining specific design goals.
2. Patient showcase of their wide (& mesmerizing!) range of gems, for my budget.
3. Curiosity from the team on my proposal plan, and wisdom to guide me in retaining that element of surprise.
4. Useful advice for the optimal lighting conditions of different gems. I managed to use this knowledge during our engagement trip!
5. Crucial advice on the best cut, carat, clarity, setting to achieve the design goals my partner and I had.
6. During the pre-assembly phase: lots of helpful graphics & clarifications for the design proposal. This allayed any anxieties I had.
7. Fruitful and consistent communication during the ring assembly process, so I could plan my engagement trip with ease.
8. There was also an emphasis on the GRS certification for the ruby. I only came to appreciate this after the proposal, when I realized that the joy my partner had with the ring and the gem was justified, for the gem was a genuine gift from me to her.

The team had been patient with my multiple visits to decide on the gemstone, as well as a gem change request at one point. So it was heartwarming when it was time to view the ring in-person, for the final product had more-than-adequately captured the vision shared with them. The ring even arrived 1 month earlier than the suggested TOA!

GIOIA had been recommended by a good friend, I will be sure to pay it forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I look for when selecting an engagement ring?

Consider the gemstone’s quality (Colour, Clarity, Cut) and your partner’s lifestyle. Think about her personal style, whether she prefers gold or platinum? Vintage or Modern? At GIOIA, we guide you through every technical detail to ensure the final ring matches her taste.

Is customising my engagement ring expensive?

It’s a common misconception that customised engagement rings cost more. When comparing quality for quality, we often offer better value than mass-market retailers because you are paying for the stone and craftsmanship, not a brand markup. You are investing in a piece built to last decades, not a brand-marked-up retail product.

What factors determine the price of a customised engagement ring?

The total investment is primarily driven by the rarity of your center gemstone (its origin, carat weight, and unheated status) alongside the intricacy of the master handcrafting. At GIOIA, our bespoke commissions typically start from SGD $3,900, and our gemologists will actively guide you on how to maximize the gemstone’s quality and setting design while remaining strictly within your comfortable budget.

Can I involve my partner in the design process?

Absolutely! We often see couples visiting together to explore gemstones. We encourage making it a shared journey when customising your engagement ring. Creating the ring becomes a cherished memory in itself.

How do I choose the right setting for my engagement ring?

Choosing the right setting is all about personal taste and the look you’re aiming for. Popular options include cathedral settings with pavé or halo diamonds. Classic trilogy rings and vintage styles each offer a unique aesthetic. At GIOIA, we guide you through the various settings, helping you select one that not only complements your chosen gemstone but also reflects your partner’s style and preferences.

Do you have warranty or aftercare for customised engagement rings?

Yes we do! At GIOIA Fine Jewellery, we take pride in the quality of our craftsmanship. We offer a one year warranty to ensure the durability and integrity of your engagement ring. Additionally, our comprehensive aftercare services include resizing and lifetime cleaning maintenance, so your engagement ring remains as stunning as the day you received it.

How to design my personalised engagement ring?

Designing an engagement ring is a personalised and unique experience together. You and your partner should really consider doing it together. The process can be incredibly meaningful, and we’re confident you’ll both enjoy the journey and the excitement of bringing your creation to life.

Do you sell lab grown diamonds?

We focus exclusively on natural gemstones. Unlike lab-grown diamonds, which are mass-produced commodities, natural gems are finite treasures that retain their legacy and value over time.

Is a custom ring better than a store-bought brand ring?

A personalised ring offers higher emotional and intrinsic value. With a store-bought ring, you are often paying for the brand markup. At GIOIA, you pay for the rarity of the gemstone and the labour of the master craftsman. Plus, you ensure that no one else in Singapore will be wearing the exact same design on their finger.
