A gemstone engagement ring is an engagement ring set with a coloured gemstone, such as sapphire, ruby or emerald, in place of a diamond. Diamonds remain a classic, but many of the couples we meet in Singapore choose a coloured stone for its rarity, its colour and the story behind it. At GIOIA Fine Jewellery, we specialise in these stones, from unheated sapphires to neon Paraiba tourmalines.

Why Choose a Gemstone Engagement Ring?

An engagement ring is no longer limited to colourless diamonds. Coloured gemstones allow you to explore varieties such as vivid sapphire, vibrant ruby, and timeless emerald. Unlike a standardised diamond engagement ring, each precious gemstone possesses its own unique history, rarity, and beauty. For a fuller comparison, read our honest look at gemstone versus diamond engagement rings, covering durability, value and everyday wear.

  • One of a Kind: No two gemstones are identical. From the royal blue of a sapphire and the vivid green of an emerald to the red of a ruby, each gives you a ring that is yours alone.
  • Heirloom & Legacy: Fine quality coloured gemstones are finite, and in our experience the finest have held their value well over the years. That is not a guarantee, but it is part of why they are passed down as heirlooms.

Among our own engagement ring clients, about four in ten choose sapphire. Ruby and Paraiba tourmaline each account for about two in ten, emerald about one in ten, and the rest choose other gemstones.

Sapphire Engagement Rings: Beyond Royal Blue

At 9 on the Mohs scale, the same as ruby, sapphire is one of the most durable coloured gemstones and well suited to daily wear. While the classic Royal Blue is timeless, GIOIA specialises in the rarer, unheated varieties.

The Symbol of Nobility & Truth: Sapphire has long been linked with nobility, truth and faithfulness, and royalty once wore it as protection against envy and harm.

  • Padparadscha Sapphire: Among the rarest of all sapphires, featuring a delicate mix of pink and orange (the “lotus blossom” hue). We look for a good balance of orange and pink. The right mix is a matter of taste, as some clients prefer more pink and others more orange, so we keep a selection of unheated padparadscha to choose from.
  • Teal & Mermaid Sapphire: A sophisticated blend of blue and green, ideal for organic, nature-inspired ring designs.
  • Unheated Royal Blue: Vivid, velvety saturation without the heat treatment common in commercial jewellery.

Ruby Engagement Rings: The Pigeon Blood Standard

The Flame of Passion: Known in Sanskrit as Ratnaraj (“King of Gems”), ruby has long been worn as a symbol of protection, vitality and passionate love. We look for a strong, even red with good brilliance.

Our focus is on Unheated Rubies from Mozambique and Burma (Myanmar), in particular the coveted “Pigeon Blood” colour. Rubies from Burma are typically low in iron, which gives them a strong red fluorescence and can make them seem to glow in daylight. That glow comes from the stone’s chemistry, not from whether it has been heated, so heated Burmese rubies usually fluoresce too.

Paraiba Tourmaline Engagement Rings: The Neon Glow

The Electric Connection: Paraiba tourmaline has a neon blue-green colour so vivid that it can look lit from inside. It symbolises a love that is energetic, magnetic, and truly one-of-a-kind. Choosing a Paraiba is a statement that your bond is a rare phenomenon: gem quality Paraiba tourmaline is found in only a handful of places on Earth.

Our Paraiba tourmalines come from Brazil and Mozambique, through trade partners. Traces of copper and manganese give the stone its electric blue-green colour.

Emerald Engagement Rings: The Lush Garden

The Jewel of Rebirth: Cleopatra’s favourite gem, the Emerald, has long symbolised fertility, growth, and eternal spring. It is a stone for couples whose love is constantly renewing. At GIOIA, we honour this history by focusing on vivid green emeralds graded from minor oil to none. Their natural inclusions are known as jardin, the French word for garden.

Unlike commercial stones, rare Emeralds require expertise to buy safely. We educate our clients on the importance of origin, with stones from leading sources such as Muzo Green (Colombia) and Zambia.

Spinel Engagement Rings: The “Sparkle” Brilliance

The Stone of Revitalisation: Often mistaken for Ruby in royal crown jewels, Spinel is actually the stone of hope and revitalisation. It is for the modern couple who values authenticity over brand names.

Once a secret of gemmologists, Spinel is the rising star of bespoke jewellery. Unlike Rubies (which are doubly refractive), Spinel is singly refractive, just like a diamond. We specialise in a wide spectrum of Spinel colours, from neon pink to metallic grey, all chosen for strong saturation. Fine spinel is usually unheated, as heating does little to improve it, so the colour you see is normally the colour the stone formed with.

Cluster Gemstone Engagement Rings

Budget-Friendly Yet Luxurious
Cluster gemstone engagement rings offer a cost-effective alternative to traditional solitaire rings. These designs incorporate multiple smaller gems, delivering a visually striking impact without the steep price tag of a large central stone.

A Symbol of Unity
The essence of a cluster gemstone ring, a harmonious assembly of various stones, beautifully symbolises the union of two souls. Personalising these rings with the birthstones of both partners weaves an intimate narrative into the ring’s design.

Diverse Designs for Every Taste
Cluster rings suit many styles, from floral motifs and modern geometric patterns to vintage Art Deco.

Gemstone Wedding Bands

Coloured gemstones are not only for engagement rings. Unique wedding bands set with a gemstone let you wear a meaningful stone every day. This pair of custom wedding bands featuring lagoon tourmaline was created with constellation inspiration for the men’s ring and flora inspiration for the ladies’ ring. The two designs are different, but they share the same tourmaline. If your engagement ring has no coloured gemstone, a wedding band is another chance to add one.

Creating Your Personalised Gemstone Engagement Ring

Expert Guidance: The “Fire” of a Gem
Photos often fail to capture the true fire and neon glow of a rare gem. We strongly recommend viewing gemstones in person under natural daylight to understand their true shade and brilliance. This is also a wonderful opportunity for you and your partner to explore different colour shades, ensuring the stone aligns with your personal style.

Are you intrigued by the idea of a gemstone engagement ring but unsure how to start? At GIOIA Fine Jewellery, the journey begins not just with a design, but with the discovery of a gem that speaks to you.

Unlike diamonds, which are graded on a standard scale, coloured gemstones offer an infinite palette of shades. During your consultation, we guide you through these subtle nuances to find the exact tone that resonates with you.

For example, a request for “Blue” can lead us from the deep velvety Royal Blue Sapphire and the pastel serenity of Aquamarine to the electric neon of Paraiba Tourmaline or the metallic brilliance of Blue Spinel. Similarly, “Green” is not just one colour. It ranges from the legendary intense Muzo Emerald and the rich, forest hues of Tsavorite Garnet to the unique teal blend of a Teal Sapphire or Green Tourmaline.

Matching Shape to Style

While diamonds are predominantly round, coloured gemstones are cut in a variety of fancy shapes to maximise their colour saturation. The shape of the gemstone dictates the architecture of the ring, and understanding this relationship is key to a cohesive design.

We will show you how different cuts influence the final look. A geometric Trillion (Triangle) or Kite shape might look striking but requires a specific, edgy setting and may not complement a softer, vintage-inspired look. Conversely, certain classic designs are best elevated by a Cushion or Oval cut. We help you visualise how the centrepiece’s geometry plays an important role in the overall balance of the ring.

A Memorable Discovery Experience

Selecting a gemstone is a sensory experience that cannot be replicated online. It is a memorable journey of elimination and discovery at GIOIA. By going through the process with you and your partner, we help you identify not only what you really love but also what you don’t like.

This hands-on comparison of gems side-by-side allows you to see the true “personality” of each stone, ensuring that the final gem chosen for your engagement ring is one you will cherish for a lifetime.

How We Judge a Centre Stone

We look at every stone in daylight, not only under shop lights. Lustre and brilliance come first. Next we check that the colour is even across the stone, with no colour zoning, which shows as lighter or darker patches. Last, we rule out a poor cut or clarity problems that would dull the stone.

Four Mistakes We See When Choosing a Gemstone

These come up again and again in our consultations.

  • Treating a gemstone as the cheaper option. A coloured gemstone is not a budget substitute for a diamond. Fine unheated sapphire and ruby are far rarer than diamond, and in our experience a top stone can cost more than a diamond of the same size.
  • Trusting an in-house certificate. A certificate issued by the seller is not independent, which leaves it open to misrepresentation. Ask for a report from an independent laboratory such as GRS, GIA or NGI.
  • Chasing origin and forgetting quality. A famous origin does not make a stone good. Judge the colour, clarity and cut first, and treat origin as something that adds to a fine stone, not something that rescues a poor one.
  • Paying a premium for an “alternative”. Tanzanite is sometimes sold at a premium as an alternative to blue sapphire. It is a lovely stone in its own right, but its colour is more violet than a sapphire’s blue, it is much softer (6 to 7 on the Mohs scale, against 9), and it should cost significantly less than a sapphire of similar size.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to commonly asked questions about our uniquely designed gemstone engagement rings.

Are coloured gemstones durable enough for daily wear?

Yes, but the choice of gemstone matters. We highly recommend Sapphires and Rubies (Mohs 9) or Spinels (Mohs 8) for engagement rings, as they are durable enough to withstand daily activities. We generally advise against softer stones like Opal or Pearl for rings that will be worn every day unless you are committed to extra care.

What is the difference between Heated and Unheated gemstones?

Unheated gemstones have not been heated to improve their colour or clarity. Heated gemstones are natural too, but unheated stones of fine colour are much rarer, which is why they usually cost more at the same quality. At GIOIA, we specialise in unheated Pigeon Blood Rubies and Royal Blue Sapphires, ensuring you own a gem of pure, natural beauty.

Do your gemstones come with certification?

Yes, for every centre stone above about SGD 1,000. These come with a report from an independent laboratory such as GRS, GIA or NGI, which confirms whether the stone is natural and whether it has been heated, and can also state its origin. Small accent stones are not certified individually.

How long does the bespoke design process take?

The entire journey, from the initial consultation and gemstone selection to the final handcrafted ring, typically takes 10 to 12 weeks. If you have a specific proposal date, please let us know during the consultation, and we will do our best to accommodate your timeline.

Are your gemstones ethically sourced?

We buy through established channels. Most fine Mozambique ruby today starts as rough sold at the auctions of licensed mining companies such as Gemfields and Fura Gems. Our rubies come through trade partners who buy rough at these auctions and have it cut. Our sapphires come through partners in Sri Lanka, one of the oldest sapphire sources in the world, whom we have worked with for over ten years. Every centre stone above about SGD 1,000 comes with a report from an independent laboratory such as GRS, GIA or NGI. We cannot trace every small accent stone to a single mine, so instead of making blanket promises, we tell you what we know about each centre stone.

Are gemstone engagement rings a good investment compared to diamonds?

In our experience, the finest unheated sapphires, pigeon blood rubies and Paraiba tourmalines have held their value better than commercial diamonds, because so few exist. That is not a promise about future prices. The stronger reason to choose one is that no other stone will be quite like it.

How much does a gemstone engagement ring cost in Singapore?

Our customised engagement rings start from about SGD 3,900. The centre gemstone makes up most of the price, and its type, size, colour and whether it is unheated matter most. Our customised engagement ring page explains how pricing works.
