Spotlight on a Masterpiece: The Sapphire Art Deco Ring

Unheated Sapphire Like No Other

The centrepiece of our collection is a customised Art Deco ring, featuring a beguiling blue sapphire of unparalleled clarity and natural beauty. This rare gemstone, remarkable for its unheated state and near-flawless clarity, is challenging to find in today’s market. Its captivating octagonal shape and meticulously cut facets radiate a brilliance that is as unique as it is enchanting. Certainly not a common piece of jewellery you would see in any typical retail jeweller in Singapore.

Design That Speaks Volumes

This ring’s design harmonises the vintage allure of Art Deco with the modern sophistication of bespoke jewellery. The sapphire, set in a meticulously crafted ring, is flanked by two steps of dazzling side diamonds. This arrangement not only enhances the sapphire’s beauty but also adds a layer of mesmerising complexity to this art deco ring.

The Timeless Elegance of Art Deco Sapphire Jewellery

Art Deco jewellery stands as a testament to timeless elegance and sophistication. With its distinct geometric shapes, clean vertical lines, and a penchant for symmetry and asymmetry alike, Art Deco pieces captivate both the eye and the imagination. The hallmark of this era is its bold, innovative designs that seamlessly blend luxury with meticulous craftsmanship. At GIOIA Fine Jewellery, we have built several commissions specifically within this tradition — working with unheated blue sapphires, colour change sapphires, and teal sapphires in geometric settings that reference the era without reproducing it exactly.

At the heart of Art Deco jewellery lies an intricate craftsmanship that transforms precious metals and gemstones into breathtaking masterpieces. Filigree work, a technique characterised by delicate threads of metal intricately woven together, showcases the era’s dedication to detail and finesse. This meticulous approach ensures that each Art Deco piece is not only a jewel but a wearable piece of art.

Art Deco design transcends time, continually inspiring top jewellers to create pieces that echo the opulence and style of a bygone era. The design’s emphasis on polished lines and detailed finishes results in jewellery that is both visually striking and emblematic of skilled craftsmanship. Each Art Deco ring tells a story, a nod to a period that revered the confluence of luxury and artistic expression.

True Art Deco jewellery is defined not just by its geometric shape, but by the intricacies of its finishing. At GIOIA, we specialise in Milgrain — a jewellery technique where tiny beads of metal are handcrafted along the edges of the setting. This creates a vintage border that softens the sharp geometric lines, adding a delicate, antique texture to the white gold or champagne gold metalwork.

Often accompanied by Filigree — fine threads of precious metal twisted into lace-like patterns — these techniques require the steady hand of a master craftsman. Unlike modern mass-produced jewellery, our bespoke Art Deco pendants are hand-finished to ensure every angle reflects the glamour of the 1920s Great Gatsby era.

More Art Deco Commissions at GIOIA

Colour Change Sapphire — The Milgrain Halo

This commission came from a couple who spent considerable time deliberating before settling on an unheated colour change sapphire as their centrepiece. The stone was chosen specifically for its dual character — under daylight it reads as a cool bluish-violet, while under incandescent light it shifts toward a warmer purple. The challenge was designing a setting that honoured that complexity without competing with it.

The answer was a floral Art Deco halo where diamonds are arranged to suggest petals rather than literal florals, with milgrain detailing running along the edges and handcrafted marquise sidebands giving the ring its vintage character. The two images below show the same ring under different lighting — a side-by-side comparison that photographs cannot easily replicate but that captures exactly what makes a colour change sapphire worth the premium.

Teal Sapphire with Spinel — Layered Art Deco Halo

The second commission took the Art Deco template in a completely different direction. A vivid unheated teal sapphire at the centre, surrounded by a vintage-inspired diamond halo with additional outer accents of bluish-green spinel. They are round brilliant bluish green shade chosen specifically to extend the teal sapphire’s oceanic palette rather than contrast with it. The layered halo construction required exceptional precision, with each tier of diamonds calibrated to sit flush without overshadowing the stone beneath it.
Set in rose gold, the warm metal creates a natural counterpoint to the cool blue-green of the sapphire.

The result is a custom ring that reads as art deco in its geometry and entirely contemporary in its colour story — two qualities that rarely coexist in a single piece. For clients drawn to teal sapphires and vintage aesthetics simultaneously, this commission is the clearest proof that the combination works.

Art Deco Tanzanite Pendant — Beyond the Rings

Not every Art Deco commission at GIOIA is a ring. This pendant centres a vivid violetish-blue tanzanite in an oval modified brilliant cut, framed by a pave diamond halo with milgrain detailing along the geometric border. The contrast between the cool violet-blue of the tanzanite and the crisp white gold setting is deliberately bold — characteristic of the 1920s aesthetic that valued chromatic tension as much as harmony. An optional Akoya seed pearl tassel can be added at the base, shifting the piece from a modern statement to something that reads as genuinely period in character.
